Geo Resource Group provides selected services based on in-house expertise and experience. For clients and projects requiring a broader range of capabilities, GRG integrates additional specialty services through working associations with complimentary firms.
GEOLOGICAL/HYDROGEOLOGICAL STUDIES
Sound data and interpretations regarding geological and hydrogeological conditions are critical to the development of effective strategies and corrective action planning to address environmental issues. GRG applies its extensive expertise in the fields of geology and hydro-geology to provide clients with a solid foundation for subsequent decision-making for a broad range of projects, including geotechnical studies, environmental contamination and remediation projects, property redevelopment, risk assessment / mitigation, regulatory compliance, and wellhead protection.
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION STUDIES/REMEDIATION
The investigation and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination are often fundamental components of industrial / commercial property transactions, property redevelopment / re-use projects, assessments of impacts from oil or gas development, regulatory compliance, and mitigation of mining and acid drainage effects. GRG has conducted soil and groundwater contamination and remediation projects ranging from relatively small-scale projects associated with UST releases to projects at large industrial complexes with contamination extending over hundreds of acres. GRG’s experience includes a wide range of contaminants, such as metals, chlorinated solvent compounds, PCBs, PAH compounds, light and dense non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL and DNAPL), and high-TDS plumes more dense than water. GRG has investigated the occurrence and movement of groundwater contamination in relatively homogenous, predictable aquifer systems and also extremely complex bedrock systems influenced by multiple levels of historical underground mining.
Where volatile organic compounds are present in soil and/or groundwater, the migration of vapors into overlying or nearby structures is often a potential exposure pathway that must be evaluated. GRG has conducted vapor intrusion (VI) studies at numerous industrial and commercial properties. Projects have included the collection of soil vapor, sub-slab soil vapor, and indoor air samples, combined with accepted modeling techniques, to estimate potential contaminant concentrations in indoor air and associated human health risk.
GRG conducts Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments according to ASTM guidelines to support the acquisition or divestment of commercial and industrial properties. GRG has received training directly from ASTM in the application of Phase I/Phase II ESA protocols to satisfy the All Appropriate Inquiry provisions of CERCLA. GRG has completed Phase I ESA’s for dozens of properties, including heavy industrial sites, power generating stations, light manufacturing facilities, former mine service facilities, commercial properties, and undeveloped parcels.
PROPERTY REDEVELOPMENT/BROWNFIELDS
GRG offers extensive experience supporting property redevelopment under programs such as Pennsylvania Act 2, the Ohio Voluntary Action Program, and the West Virginia Voluntary Remediation Program. GRG projects have included former industrial properties where ownership has been transferred and the properties have been subdivided for re-use industrial parks and small business incubators. A key aspect of these projects has been the development and implementation of risk mitigation and risk management programs to minimize the need for active remediation of environmental media.
RISK MITIGATION / RISK MANAGEMENT
Many state and federal regulatory programs, including those supporting property re-use, incorporate risk-based cleanup provisions which provide for remedies that mitigate or manage risk, in lieu of active remedial actions. Measures to mitigate or manage risk can include institutional controls, such as deed-based land or groundwater use restrictions, engineering controls, such as paved parking areas to address exposure to soil contamination, and routine health and safety procedures for workers who may contact contaminated soil or shallow groundwater. GRG has successfully implemented these types of remedial measures at numerous sites to substantially reduce or eliminate the need for active remediation. GRG often advocates the collection of specific data to support risk mitigation/management remedies in the early stages of site characterization and strategy development.
GRG has a long history of working on behalf of industry, utilities, and municipalities to achieve and maintain compliance under many federal and state environmental regulatory programs.

Federal and state Safe Drinking Water Regulations include provisions for Wellhead Protection planning by public water suppliers. GRG’s expertise in hydrogeology and experience conducting groundwater contamination studies and evaluating contaminant sources and migration in the environment make the firm particularly well-qualified to conduct wellhead protection planning.
GRG assists water suppliers in the development and implementation of Wellhead Protection Plans, including technical and non-technical aspects of the planning process.
The highly-experienced professionals of GRG and its affiliates provide litigation support relating to environmental and occupational exposure matters in the form of background technical input and strategy development, preparation of position papers and expert reports, as well as expert testimony by deposition and at trials and hearings.
